Welcome to Pet Talk, an occasional column about homeless pets and related topics. Today we’re discussing the critical role of animal shelters in helping to improve the lives of homeless pets.

First, consider these sobering statistics for the years 2024-2025, from the ASPCA:

  • Intake & Population: Roughly 6.3 million pets enter U.S. shelters annually (approx. 3.1 million dogs, 3.2 million cats).

  • Adoptions: Approximately 4.1 million shelter animals are adopted each year (2 million dogs, 2.1 million cats).

  • Euthanasia: 607,000 animals were euthanized in 2024, down from over 2 million in 2011.

  • Returns: 710,000 stray animals were returned to their owners.

  • No-Kill Status: As of 2024, 52% of U.S. shelters are no-kill.

  • Capacity Challenges: Shelter overcrowding remains a major issue, particularly with large dogs in government shelters.

Locally, Flathead County Animal Shelter (FCAS), and other shelters continually struggle with an overload of pets in need of rescuing and care. FCAS in particular often verges on overcapacity because of large numbers of stray- or surrendered pets.

For example, in 2025 the shelter took in about 1300 animals. Of those, about 600 were successfully adopted and 400 strays were returned to their owners.

Folks like you can help alleviate the homeless pet crisis by adopting one or more rescued pets. Doing so is virtually guaranteed to make you and your adoptee feel good every day! Below are just a few of the homeless pets up for adoption at Flathead County Animal Shelter as of this writing.

So if you’re seeking one or more loving companions please schedule a meet-and-greet by phoning Flathead County Animal Shelter at (406) 752-1310.

And did you know about the low adoption fees and other incentives at Flathead County Animal Shelter? For example, Flathead Shelter Friends offers a Senior Pet Voucher, which pays up to $350 toward veterinary care for 7+ year-old adopted pets.
