Welcome to Pet Talk, an occasional column about homeless pets and related topics.
Calling all Boxer lovers!

Today we’re featuring a story about a handsome shelter dog named Rocky, who’s been residing at the Flathead County Animal Shelter since January.
Now, Rocky’s situation isn’t as dire as the one we previously wrote about, in which a poor dog was stuck in a Louisiana shelter for 11 years before finally getting adopted. Still, after 5 months in the Flathead County Animal Shelter, Rocky’s totally eager for a new home.
About Rocky: He’s a 7-year-old Boxer/Mix—fun, strong, healthy, intelligent. (In fact, he’s actually bilingual and responds to commands in both English and Spanish!)
Rocky is both house- and crate trained, has good manners, and has previously lived with a family with kids. So, although he’s a big strong Boxer, he apparently was a great companion with the prior owners' children.
So what’s not to like there??
For those of you who don’t know anything about the breed, here’s a brief overview from the Petplan website:
“An adoring pet with boundless energy and a mischievous sense of humor. Intelligent, playful, and energetic, Boxers can adapt to most environments as long as they get plenty of exercise . . . and their even temperaments make them kind and charismatic pets.”
At the shelter, Rocky can hardly contain his boundless enthusiasm when approached by staffers and volunteers in the kennel hallway. In fact, sometimes I worry that he’s going to wag his fanny off in anticipation of the play yard!
Then, out in the yard, he often makes a mad rush for the rubber squeaky toys, followed by fun gallops around the fence line.
Indeed, Rocky is a staff- and volunteer favorite at the shelter!
But as of this writing, Rocky may be showing signs of shelter fatigue. As some of his handlers recently pointed out, he’s begun to withdraw a bit, unhappy in his kennel or playing by himself instead of with the yard handlers.
So, calling all Boxer lovers—Rocky’s spirit may be sagging! In this big, populated valley, surely there are plenty of folks in need of a fun enthusiastic dog like Rocky—especially those who’ve owned Boxers before. If that’s you, please call the shelter to schedule your Show-Me appointment for cute boy Rocky. (Or for any adoptable dog or cat, for that matter.)
Well, that’s it for today’s Pet Talk. If you too love pets, please consider adopting one (or several!) when the time is right for you. You can also help spread the word among family and friends in rapidly growing Flathead County. As you can see, pet homelessness is a very serious issue these days, so please support all our local shelters in any way that you can.
