Spay, Neuter, Save Lives

Welcome to Pet Talk, an occasional column about homeless pets and related topics. Today we’re discussing the importance of spaying and neutering domestic pets—a timely topic given the many cases of abandoned/unwanted kittens that have been occurring in the Flathead.

Consider these facts from Wikipedia:

“Cats are incredibly prolific breeders. Females reach sexual maturity as early as 4 to 9 months of age and can have up to 3 litters a year. Gestation lasts about 63 to 65 days, and a female can get pregnant again just weeks after giving birth. And, although a typical litter yields 3 to 6 kittens, litters can range anywhere from 1 to 19 kittens.”

Please consult your local veterinarian for more info, or take advantage of any low-cost spay/neuter clinics whenever they occur!

These days, Flathead County Animal Shelter is often full to the max, and adoption fees for adult dogs (5 months to 7 yrs old) are currently being waived. So, if you need a new 4-legged family member please consider adopting one or more homeless pets from the shelter today.
