Pickup Trucks and Pets: A Risk Not Worth Taking
Welcome to Pet Talk, an occasional column about homeless pets and related topics. Today we’re considering a common “pet peeve” expressed by many vets and animal lovers.
Namely, dogs riding in the back of open pickup trucks!
Although some might think such practices simply reflect “rural chic,” it’s just not cool!
Here’s some info from Google AI:
“Transporting a dog loose in an open pickup truck bed is extremely dangerous and illegal in several jurisdictions. . . Veterinarians strongly oppose letting dogs ride in the open bed of a pickup truck, viewing it as a dangerous unnecessary risk to the animal's life and health. Consider these major risks:
• Ejection and Falls: A sudden stop, sharp turn, accident, or a dog simply losing its balance on slick metal can throw the animal from the vehicle. Vets frequently treat severe injuries from falls, including broken bones, pelvic fractures, and traumatic brain injuries that often require amputations or result in death.
• Strangulation: Tethers or leashes tied to a dog in a truck bed create a fatal choking hazard if the dog jumps or falls over the side, effectively hanging the animal while the vehicle is still moving.
• Wind/Debris: High-speed wind forces can damage delicate respiratory tissues, while blowing dust, gravel, and road debris frequently cause painful eye, ear, and nose injuries.
• Temperature Extremes: Metal truck beds can become scorching hot in warm weather and severely burn paw pads, or cause hypothermia during freezing conditions.”
Whew. . . all quite sobering! (Never mind the extreme vet bills that can result!)
