Pet Talk: National Numbers, Local Lives

Welcome to Pet Talk, an occasional column about homeless pets and related topics. Today we’re considering some sobering statistics about homeless pets in the U.S. (courtesy of Google AI based on statistics from the ASPCA and Best Friends Animal Society):
Annual Intake: Almost 6 million total pets (3 million dogs, 3 million cats).
Common Surrender Reasons: Housing restrictions, rental evictions, and the rising cost of pet food and veterinary care.
Stray vs. Relinquished: Many rescued pets are strays rather than owner surrenders.
Adoptions: About 4.2 million animals find adoptive homes each year.
Reunifications: Roughly 640,000 pets are returned to their owners, but dogs have a much higher return-to-owner rate (19%) than cats (3%).
Euthanasia: Nearly 600,000 shelter animals are euthanized yearly. However, two-thirds of U.S. shelters operate under "no-kill" benchmarks (i.e., maintaining a 90% or higher save rate).
Whew. . . all quite sobering! Fortunately, you can rest assured that our local shelters and other rescue outfits work hard every day to fight the homeless pet problem.
