Pet Talk: Growing Towns, Full Shelters

Welcome to Pet Talk, an occasional column about homeless pets and related topics. Today we’re discussing various statistics regarding the pet population in Flathead County.

Did you know that both Kalispell, and Flathead County are among the fastest growing populations in Montana? For instance, the county’s population is currently approaching 200,000 folks!

And how many pets live here? Extrapolating from U.S. data describing average family sizes and average numbers of pets per family, as many as 50,000 dogs and a similar number of pet cats might exist in this county! (Such estimates are necessarily rough, but you get the drift, right?)

Sadly, U.S.-based averages also suggest that our local shelters might take in as many as 2000 surrendered or abandoned dogs and cats per year. (Of course, we’ll never know how many unfortunate animals are thoughtlessly abandoned and never rescued by anyone.)

Consequently, Flathead County Animal Shelter and other area shelters are often full to the max. So, if you’d like a new 4-legged family member please consider adopting one or more homeless pets from the county shelter today. Below are some of the available pets as of this writing.

Here are just a few of the pets currently available for adoption at Flathead County Animal Shelter. To schedule a meet-and-greet appointment, call 406-752-1310.
