Local Care, Big Impact: Helping Homeless Pets In Flathead County

Welcome to Pet Talk, an occasional column about homeless pets and related topics. With the advent of a new year and associated resolutions, some folks may be thinking about adopting a homeless pet as a new family member!
Here are some sobering statistics: Estimates from national advocacy organizations like the ASPCA suggest that between 6 and 7 million dogs and cats entered animal shelters in the U.S. during 2024. And, although more than 4 million animals were subsequently adopted, many were euthanized due to limited shelter capacity and overcrowding.
Fortunately, Flathead area pet lovers can be proud of local animal shelters for their professional management of homeless pets. For example, although Flathead County Animal Shelter took in more than 800 dogs and 500 cats last year, local adopters stepped up and rescued about 300 dogs and 280 cats!
And what became of the remaining pets? Well, nearly 400 strays were successfully returned to their owners. (Also note that, unlike in big cities, the county shelter does not resort to euthanasia for population control.)
So if you’re seeking one or more loving companions please schedule a meet-and-greet by phoning Flathead County Animal Shelter at (406) 752-1310.
And did you know about the low adoption fees and other incentives at Flathead County Animal Shelter? For example, Flathead Shelter Friends offers a Senior Pet Voucher, which pays up to $350 toward veterinary care for 7+ year-old adopted pets. For more information please contact Flathead County Animal Shelter at 406-752-1310 or visit https://flatheadcounty.gov/department-directory/animal.
