Welcome to Pet Talk, an occasional column about homeless pets and related topics. This month we’re discussing the so-called Giving Season. That is, the time of year when generous donors and other entities feel especially strongly about sharing for the benefit of favorite causes.

So why support nonprofit organizations like Flathead Shelter Friends? First, we exist solely for the purpose of supporting the many homeless pets housed at Flathead County Animal Shelter.

Below are examples of the charitable work funded in whole or part by Flathead Shelter Friends over the years—enabled by our generous supporters. We funded several kennel expansion and remodeling projects, and a building addition for the cat housing section of the shelter; we expanded the cat enclosures and purchased 40 new enclosures; we funded a building addition for a veterinary wing, along with new, state-of-the-art medical equipment; we paid for an air conditioning system for the dog kennels; we funded installation of a large storage shed for the shelter; and we recently paid for the installation of a large synthetic lawn in the outside play yards. Also, we recently used some grant money from two generous donors to install a building-wide intercom system to enhance communication and safety.

In addition to the physical infrastructure projects, Flathead Shelter Friends helps pay for veterinary costs for senior- and other pets, and subsidizes adoption fees for local adopters. Last but not least, our nonprofit and associated community members contribute hundreds of volunteer hours for shelter support activities.

Whew! That’s quite a list of accomplishments, all funded by caring, animal-loving folks like you!

So if you’re seeking one or more loving companions please schedule a meet-and-greet by phoning Flathead County Animal Shelter at (406) 752-1310.

And did you know about the low adoption fees and other incentives at Flathead County Animal Shelter? For example, Flathead Shelter Friends offers a Senior Pet Voucher, which pays up to $350 toward veterinary care for 7+ year-old adopted pets.
